No Scout meeting 5-5-09
on 2009-05-05
Just quick reminder -- we only have meetings only twice a month. Our next meeting is 5/12/09 and we will be planning out our next two events. Little Indy race on 5/16 and Indians ball game/campout on 6/5. There will be a sign-up list for both events along with a request for payment for tickets.

Popcorn Sale update

$668 of popcorn has been sold over the past week. Thanks to those who helped out at Lowe’s! At our next Pack Meeting, we will be selling whatever is left at $5 off the normal price. We currently have 3 cases of Microwave Kettlecorn left and 11 pop corn tins of various flavors. If you could help purchase something or take some popcorn to work to sell, it would help out the pack. 100% of discounted popcorn sales goes back into the Pack general fund to help us get through our Fall activities.

Bluespring Caverns

Sorry for the delay in getting this out to you. I wanted to get this to you on the chance scouts this evening will be canceled. Should this evening’s meeting be canceled, please bring with you the remainder of the cave camp fees on Saturday.

I will arrive at Payless in South Anderson behind the mini-golf area at 10:15am. Depart at 10:30. We will have lunch on the way stopping at a fast food restaurant. I will drive to Spring Mill State park where we will explore a cave and if the weather permits, hike a trail or two and play in the snow. There is a $5 gate fee per car.

If you have room to allow another family to car-pool, that would be most welcome in an effort to conserve energy and reduce fuel cost. I will be driving a trail blazer and can seat an additional 3-4 passengers.

I will leave springmill at approximately 5:45 pm, pick up dinner on the way and drive to bluespring caverns. We enter the cave at 7pm. I recommend planning on being there early as late arrivals will be disappointed as there will be no one at the front desk.
If you plan to join me for the spring mill activity, bring full winter clothing including snow pants, heavy winter coat, layers of clothing, water proof gloves (2 if you have them), 2 warm winter hats and possibly a sled as I understand they have significant snow. You will also appreciate heavy winter socks.

For the cave adventure you will need the following:

Flashlight – extra batteries
Old clothing and boots or sneekers for caving
Change of clothing – including shoes
Warm sleeping bag / small pillow
Warm coat
Towel / plastic bag for wet – dirty clothing.
Snacks if you wish. Snacks can also be purchased at the snack bar.
Ear plugs if you require them for sleep.

Please do not over-pack. You will be required to carry all gear in one trip down into the cave. And more importantly, you will carry it out (up hill). Cell phone signal will not penetrate the layer of rock above you so plan accordingly.

The address for Bluespring caverns is below. Please use whatever method of mapping directions you choose.

1459 Bluespring Caverns Rd
Bedford, IN 47421
812-279-9471

Every minor participant is required to have a signed waiver. I have attached the form to be signed.

We will leave the cave by 9am and begin the journey home in order to spend Sunday afternoon with family.

If you have any questions or if I may be of any assistance, please contact me.

BACK TO SCHOOL MEETING-UPDATED INFO
on 2008-09-09
Back to School Meeting (part 1) will be Tuesday, September 9th at 6:30pm at Wesley Free Methodist Church. This is our recruiting night where boys grade 1 through grade 5 are invited to join our Cub Scout Pack. On Saturday, September 13th at 10am we will meet for Back to School Meeting (part 2) at Camp Kikthawenund. Here we will sign up scouts that didn't have the opportunity on Tuesday or hadn't quite made up their mind yet. First, we will meet at the Cub/Nature Shelter and be answering any questions for new scouts or those boys interested in joining and then we will be having a pitch-in. Your den leader will contact you regarding what to bring for the pitch-in lunch. Then from Noon to 3pm, we will have access to the pool for swimming (Sparkles is going to be our lifeguard). If you have your swimming assignment from WAC please bring it with you. Also, you MUST be a scout registered in our Pack to enter the pool. After that we will be doing a few activites like capture the flag, frisbie, flag football and/or a couple other things we are working on. We will end the fun-filled, action-packed day at Camp K at 6:00pm.
For our pitch-in, if your scout's last name starts with:
A-J=Bring Dessert
K-S=Bring Drinks
T-Z=Bring Side Dish
The Pack will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers, buns and tableware.

Scouts Cancelled 2-12-08
on 2008-02-12
Due to inclimate weather, there will be no scout meeting tonight. We would rather be safe than risk someone getting in an accident before or after scouts. Especially due to the forcast of more freezing rain tonight.

We will be having our annual polar bear camping trip 11-16-2007. Be sure to check out the Winter Camping guidelines.

More information will be given at Tuesdays meeting. Be sure to be there. We will have some advancement opportunities as well as some fun for all. Be sure not to miss this one.

Progress Toward Rank Recall
on 2007-10-24

The Cub Scout progress toward rank totem has been recalled by the BSA due to unacceptable lead content. This should not pose a problem as it is not typically placed in the mouth or in direct contact with the skin.

This is a voluntary recall and the replacements should be available sometime in December. As a pack, we are asking that you return the totem during one of our weekly meetings and we will replace as they become available.

If you have any questions regarding this recall, please see the council web site

It would be most beneficial if you place your scout’s name on the totem so we know which families returned them and with whom we will need to follow-up.

Thank you for your cooperation and we will see you at the pack meeting Tuesday October 30th.

Yours in Scouting,
Tom Wood
Advancement Coordinator

Thanks to Brenda D, the new and improved newsletter is available here on the web. It can be found HERE.

Also included on the back of the newsletter was the pack list for our Skillsfest Adventure. Be sure to print your copy and check off the boxes. You do not want to be out there cold and miserable.

Webelos Adventure Camp
on 2007-07-05
Get ready! Webelos Adventure Camp is upon us. Do you have the gear you need? Start packing early so you can pick up what you will need.

Here are a few helpful tips.

Food. You are permitted to bring snack food as needed. Please pack separately. All food will be required to be placed in the storage cabinet at the camp site. Otherwise, food left in daypacks is a prime target for the raccoons who are quite capable of opening zippers on daypacks.

Water Shoes. Scouts are required to wear shoes in Canoes / Katamarans. These will be immersed in water. Therefore, I recommend beach shoes. Flip Flops and sandals are not permitted.

Knives are not permitted. Your scout will not need one.

Your scout will not need a tent. Canvas army style tents are provided. Your scout will be sleeping on a cot provided by the camp. A sleeping pad is not required.

Comfortable shoes are a requirement. From experience, I can safely say we will be walking miles every day. Do not send your scout with new boots.

Scout Book. It is a good thing to send your scout with his Webelos Book. However, It is strongly recommended that it be placed in a Zip Lock Bag. They are difficult to dry and it is an absolute certainty it will get wet otherwise.

If you have a small soap it would be good to send. It will not likely be opened. The scouts will be reminded to brush teeth / wash up, but we will be unable to validate it has been done.

Medications must be clearly marked and placed in a zip lock bag with the scout's name written on it. If you have a few minutes, please write out on a separate piece of paper when the medications are due. Each meal there will be an announcement for scouts to get their medications. Once again before bed we will have a medications run. If your scout has an inhaler or emergency device, they are permitted to carry that. Otherwise, it must be stored with the medical officer.

If you plan to join your scout for meals, these must be paid for at drop off. Each meal is $5. There is a family meal on Tuesday evening. Please be aware. This is historically a difficult time for the scouts. By this time, they are tired and sometimes homesick. Plus, you will be thinking it may be easier for them to just go home so you dont have to come back the next morning to pick them up. I would encourage you to allow your scout to stay the night. We typically have fun that evening as it is the last night of camp and we break out all of the food and have a good time.

Home Sickness. We have on occasion had problems with this. The leaders and the staff at WAC are quite capable of dealing with this. Every morning, someone will get a water jug poured over their head as part of a deal to keep a scout in camp.

Money to send. I recommend only sending $10 with your scout. There will be opportunity for your scout to spend this on junk at the trading post.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any leader. This will be Mr. Wood's 4th year and Mr. Dulaney's 2nd year at WAC.

Cub Scout Day Camp
on 2007-07-05
Here are a few tips on how CSDC works.

Each morning, we will meet at Wesley. You are required to bring a sack lunch and a day pack. I recommend making the lunch completely disposable. Place your food in a zip lock bag with the scout's name on it. We will have coolers with ice for lunch storage.

Please feed your scout a good breakfast. They will have a long day and need some protein. They will burn through a pop tart in the first 30 minutes.

Water bottles are required. Please no soda. If you choose to send a soda with your scout, please reserve it for lunch. I recommend a sports drink or juice. It will be hot and we will remind the scouts to drink frequently. There will be water refill coolers at every station. I recommend 2 bottles. One for your scout to use and a second one in case they lose the first one.

Please click the 'Activities' link on the left and reference more information about CSDC. As always, if you have any questions, please contact a leader.

Also, we are in need of Parents to assist with CSDC. You will be needed to guide the scouts to their activities and assist with a few activities such as crafts. If you are able to help, please speak with Mr. Brandon.

Pack Meeting Tuesday June 26th
on 2007-06-20
Please remember we have our monthly pack meeting the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30. We have some advancement to give out and some other recognition.

Also, our summer uniform is typically our class 'B' shirt. So if you have one, feel free to wear that rather than the full scout Class A.

Hope you are having a good summer and we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Scouting Spirit, the Spirit of America
on 2005-09-11
It never ceases to amaze me when ordinary people perform extraordinary acts. I can't help but think of those kinds of people when September 11 rolls around. The truth is that this happens every day in our country. The hurricane has brought this phenominon about yet again on a large scale.

I watched a neighbor load his gear in a pickup truck, readying himself for a trip to New Orleans last week. The scouts that went to the Police station last year will remember him from the S.W.A.T. room. Part of his gear inlcuded his gun. He has a wonderful family right here in Anderson and he is already a Police officer. What is it that makes him risk his life for others? Service.

Serving others on any scale is part of what we, as Scouts and as Christians, are called to do. Serving others can be going to a storm ravaged city or it can be as simple as helping out your neighborhood. I don't think too many Cub Scouts will be going to Louisianna any time soon. What we can do is serve right here in our city and in our neighborhood!!!! It DOES make a difference!!!

Remember the part that says "Promise to do my duty to God and my country and help other people"?

Hopefully learning to serve as a young Scout will encourage you when the time comes later in life to serve to your utmost ability.

Keep up the great work at school!!!!

Good Scouting,

Cubmaster McCoy
